Need A Hat?

Yes, it's here! Hot Off the Press!!

After a fair bit of technical hair-pulling the booklets arrived Thursday afternoon and Sophy and I immediately packed them up and shipped them to Sturbridge, MA, for me to sell at the trade show next week (and hopefully for Deb to show and sell when she does her classes at Reba's store The Fiber Loft in Harvard, MA). On Friday we sent off our first store shipment to Diane of Georgetown Knitting & Crafts. Karen, of SheepStrings in Dwight ON, stopped to pick up copies to take to the Knitters Frolic Show in Toronto and for Miko and Jennifer at The Purple Purl.
As an interesting aside, Karen stopped by my house on the way home from doing the show (mainly to get fed I think) and told me that people had trouble believing that they could use ANY yarn for ANY hat in the booklet as much as Karen assured them they could (Karen is one of the designers in the book, see page 45, hat #10 so she knew this was true, lol). They bought the booklet on faith ... and hope. I think they'll be pleased.
I've put more detail and bigger pictures on the Cabin Fever web site if you want to go have a look!

Hockey Night in Canada

Yes, it's hat time! We're working on a new hat booklet for children and adults with the patterns being available in most gauges of yarn. I thought of about 6 things I wanted to do but started with a(nother) flap cap. I really like them and they seem quite popular right now. But, just to be different, I decided to try to do one from the top down. Yes! It works great. Plus it has the added standard benefit of top down knitting - you can try it on while you go. Now, this was not of use for me as I knit the first one in the infant size (instant gratification kinda thing) but the theory holds. So, there was a hockey game on last night ....
And yes, that little cutie is on a toilet roll - no kiddies around the house to try this on so had to improvise.
So, there you go. A hat. I knit this in our Cabin Fever Cotton Tweed DK but now I'll have to knit this up in the various yarn weights but pleased with the first go. And naturally, immediately cast on for the next idea. I thought a slip stitch pattern would be cool but now I think my idea was a little too subtle.

In fact, not sure you can see much at all ..... rrrrriiiipppppp .... next!

Toques

I finished a toque today for my son who had requested a sunshine yellow hat to go with his turquoise jacket and red snowpants. I think I got the colour right. It's the Family of Toques pattern http://www.cabinfever.ca/P117.htmla/P117.html with an adjustment. It was deemed too pointy. The decreases are worked every other round which I did until I had 11 sts between each of the decrease points then I worked the decreases every round. It rounded out the top to his satisfaction. He wears it like this with no turn up of the brim. It's the way it's done now apparently and who am I, a mere parent, to dictate anything that has to do with fashion. I'm just glad to see a handknitted item out there being used. Right now he's out snowboarding and this hat has just been washed, after gaining approval, and is drying out so I have no fashion shot to show you.

But this is the fashion shot from Christmas of the handmade hats, made by Lynda, on my two kids (right) and my nephews (left). I know that my son has worn his red hat every day since he got it.

Handknits are back on the slopes and my son is the envy of all his friends.

Yes!
